Some Question-Begging Objections to Rule Consequentialism

چکیده
This paper defends views like rule consequentialism by distinguishing between two sorts of ideal world objections. It aims to show that one those objections is question-begging. Its success would open up a path forward for such views.

Begging the Question and Bayesians
In a recent article Patrick Maher shows that the ‘depragmatised’ form of Dutch Book arguments for Bayesianism tend to beg the question against their most interesting anti-Bayesian opponents. I argue that the same criticism can be levelled at Maher’s own argument for Bayesianism. The arguments for Bayesianism in the literature fall into three broad categories. There are Dutch Book arguments, bot...
متن کاملOn some early objections to Bohm’s theory
Recent literature on Bohm’s alternative to mainstream quantum mechanics may create the misleading impression that, except for perfunctory dismissals, the theory was ignored by the physics community in the years immediately following its proposal. As a matter of fact, Einstein, Pauli, and Heisenberg all published criticisms of Bohm’s theory, explaining their reasons for not accepting the theory....

TT is about 10 years since 5-foot tubular fluorescent lamps were first used in this country for factory lighting. At first, and throughout the years of war, only one type of lamp, designated as " white," was made available, and the use of this was controlled and limited to vital factories and other war establishments where there was special need, not only of good artificial lighting, but also o...
متن کاملInference , Circularity , and Begging the Question MATTHEW
I develop a syntactic concept of circularity, which I call propositional circularity. With respect to a given use of an argument advanced as a statement of inference for the benefit of a reasoner R, if the direct and indirect premises R would have to accept in order to accept the conclusion includes the conclusion, then the collection of premises is propositionally circular. The argument fails ...

139 words] Rule-consequentialism is an ethical theory that does a better job than any other of justifying our moral intuitions from a single overarching principle. My dissertation defends a novel formulation of this view as an account of a good person. First, I argue that a rule-consequentialist does “what a good person would do,” and that if everyone were like her, the world would be as good a...
